Cooking Timer 70 min
Portions 8
Ingredients
  • 500 g sausage meat (or crumbled sausage)
  • 1 loaf of crusty bread (about 8 cups), cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
  • 2 apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh sage, chopped
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
How To Do
  • 1.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the bread cubes on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven for 10-15 minutes, stirring halfway, until they are golden and slightly crisp. Set aside.
  • 2.
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage meat, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • 3.
In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the chopped onion and celery, and sauté for 4-5 minutes until softened. Add the diced apples and garlic and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  • 4.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes, cooked sausage, sautéed vegetables, parsley, sage, thyme, black pepper, and salt to taste.
  • 5.
Pour the chicken or vegetable broth over the mixture and gently toss to moisten the bread. Add the beaten eggs and mix until everything is evenly combined.
  • 6.
Lightly grease a baking dish and spread the stuffing mixture evenly.
  • 7.
Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and slightly crispy.
  • 8.
Sprinkle additional chopped parsley on top before serving for a fresh touch. Serve warm as a side dish to your main meal.
